W. Summers (English school engraver active in London in the second half of the 19th century) "The Winning Post" Original etching in aquatint from a subject by Henry Alken Junior (Ipswich 1810 - London 1892) published in London by McQueen on 21 April 1871. Beautiful first edition copy, masterfully printed in color on heavy paper and retouched with watercolor and tempera with shellac raises, with good margins beyond the imprint of the plate, with a slight uniform burnishing probably due to contact with the material frame, with some slight traces of moisture on the low edge and a short recomposed tear, which does not affect the engraved part, on the right, on the reverse old gluing traces along all the edges, burnishing and pencil markings but overall, considered the considerable size, in excellent general condition. Rara. Beautiful representation of the arrival of one of the most prestigious races in the world, the Derby of England at Epsom Downs. The lower part of the composition is occupied by the twenty-nine horses participating in the race on the mile and four furlongs led by their respective jockeys, the winner has detached himself at least one length from the group and comfortably crosses the finish line in line with the "pole" behind which he is positioned the arrival judge, behind him all the others, in the distance at the end of the straight you can see the famous curve of the Tattenham Corner and the crowd of spectators who have already invaded the track. In the upper part in the center stands the bulk of the Grand Stand on which the British flag stands, not far from the Queen's Pavillon which houses the Royal Family and its guests and the whole parterre traditionally overcrowded for Derby Day.
